In the hills to the west of Quito lies the legendary Yanacocha, a nature reserve of immeasurable beauty and fascinating species of both birds (especially hummingbirds) and plants.

Yanacocha Reserve is well-known among local birders. Originally created to protect the habitat of the critically-threatened Black-breasted Puffleg, it’s also home to other interesting species, including: Andean Guan, Imperial snipe, Giant Conebill, Tawny, Undulated, Chestnut-crowned and Rufous Antpittas, Ocellated Tapaculo.

There’s also plenty for hummingbird lovers to enjoy at the feeders. Keep your eyes peeled for Great Sapphirewing, Sapphire-vented and Golden-breasted Pufflegs, Tyrian Metaltail, Buff-winged Starfrontlet, and of course the unforgettable Sword-billed hummingbird.

You might also be fortunate to spot wildlife like the shy spectacled Andean Bear, the Andean Fox, Coati, Guanta, and maybe even a puma.

Your driver will pick you up from your hotel in Quito at 6:00 a.m. for about an hour’s drive to the trail entrance to Yanacocha. You can then follow the trail at your own pace to the interpretive center, side-trails of low and medium difficulty, the hummingbird garden, a waterfall, and a picnic area.

Return to the parking area to meet your driver by 2 p.m. and you will be back to your hotel in Quito by mid-afternoon.

Make sure to pack a lunch and bring cameras, binoculars, a rain poncho, good walking shoes, warmer clothes, a water bottle, a head covering, sunscreen,
and insect repellent.
