Description
Â
A great tour fully inside the northern side of Quito for those looking for a short outing to these pre-Incan sites sitting on the hillsides above the city.
La Florida is an ancient burial site that dates to 340 A.D. Archaeologists discovered six very deep shaft tombs where the human remains of 76 individuals were found to be buried in squatting positions. While the remains have been removed to a museum, the site has placed replicas into the tombs to show how the people were buried.
Rumipamba is a protected ancestral space dating from 1500 B.C. to 1500 A.D. where there is still evidence of the Quitu culture, and of other more ancient settlements of the aboriginal history of Ecuador.
At the site, they have used archaeological finds to carefully rebuild replicas of the original dwellings built of mud and thatched roofs, surrounded by stone walls.
There is also evidence of shallow tombs, consisting of ceramic offerings that give us indications of their ritual customs related to death.

Go to the exact middle of the world, the Equator (after which the country is named), which is just outside the city limits. Known as “Mitad del Mundo” (tr. middle of the world), the site is marked by a massive landmark that is hard to miss. Next door is the more amazing attraction, Museo de Intiñan, which has a number of attractions that allow visitors to experience the polar pull of opposing gravity affected by 0 latitude, as well as the ancient spiritual and cultural significance of the area’s alignment to the Sun and other astronomical phenomenon.
The driver will pick you up from your hotel at 8:30 a.m. and take you to both sights mentioned, with ample time to visit both, returning you to your hotel between 12:30 and 1:00 p.m.

Venture south of the city for a living experience with the reintroduction of alpacas to the environment, at Wiracocha, east of Latacunga. Alpacas have been played an important role across the Andean highlands, and you will see how their hair is used to make handicrafts (hats, jewelry, scarves, hats, sweaters, ponchos, socks, shoes, tapestries, gloves etc), and the guano (manure) of the alpaca is used in the farm for organic production of crops.
After visiting with alpacas, we take your further east into the mountains to visit the amazing traditional artist community of Tigua, who are known all over the world for their vibrant oil paintings painted on deer hide. You will get to visit a couple of their galleries and be able to purchase paintings directly from the artists.
The driver will pick you up from your hotel at 8:30 a.m. and take you to both sights mentioned, returning you to your hotel between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. During the trip we will make a brief stop for a typical Ecuadorian lunch (vegetarian options will be available).
